Australian Vintage Posters

During the early to mid-20th century, travel posters played a crucial role in the marketing efforts of railway companies and tourism boards worldwide. In Australia, artists like James Northfield (1887-1973) were instrumental in creating visually appealing advertisements that enticed people to explore the vast country. Northfield’s commissions often came from major entities such as the Australian National Travel Association, Victorian Railway, and Trans-Australia Railway, tasking him with designing posters for various Australian locations and services. ‘Take a Kodak’ was a famous catch phrase which appeared on many of the Australian Vintage Posters created by Northfield. One of the rarest Northfield posters included in our collection is Australia Ninety Years of Progress – Melbourne Collins Street, an extremely rare poster created for the Australian government during the mid-20th century.

The Trans-Australian Railway, which connects Kalgoorlie in Western Australia to Port Augusta in South Australia, was a monumental engineering feat and a symbol of national unity. Posters promoting this railway emphasized the comfort and speed of crossing the continent, often promising to “save days across Australia”. A prime example of this is the famous poster by Percy Trompf, ‘Luxurious travel – night & day across Australia’, which is part of the collection at Vintage Posters. Percy Trompf’s posters are valuable examples of early 20th-century commercial art and a significant part of Australia’s cultural heritage. His work effectively captured the romanticism of travel and leisure, influencing public perception of Australia as a tourist destination. Original Vintage Percy Trompf posters are highly sought after by collectors, reflecting their artistic quality and historical importance.  His work played a significant role in shaping the visual identity of Australian tourism and consumer advertising during a pivotal period of national development. Trompf’s ability to capture the carefree spirit and natural beauty of Australia made his designs widely popular and effective.
